Jon Nolan’s Dunkirk, or BBC’s Blue Planet II series for instance: grab the CRF17 encode, and it will be miles ahead of the 1080p remux. There are only very few releases that are entirely mastered in 4K. You will be hard pressed to spot the difference unless you freeze the frame and pixel peep. Release groups like terminal, iamable, whiterhino encode using CRF17, which is borderline placebo when it comes to quality. When transferring back to 4K, you just end up with a shitty upscale from 2K resolution.

Movie scenes might be captured on 4K equipment, but all the post processing where the VFX are added are done in an intermediate 2K resolution to save time and money. The reason you can’t spot the difference is because the majority of 4K UHD Blu-ray commercial releases aren’t actually 4K.

but for REMUX and x265 encoding, things are not that easy.Įven if I compare for example Alita REMUX and HEVC releases, they look the same.

My question is: Since I want to collect few movies for my library, which one should I store? I know that the answer looks easy, since 60GB X 15GB is easy to answer it self, BUT, if I could see the real benefits of having the remux, I would prefer to have it.įor example, it is easy to convince few friends to have tv shows in 1080p well encoded, comparing to YIFI small-size releases. I also tried to watch close, like 1 meters from the tv, also tried to pause during explosions and action scenes, and could not spot any bad encoding pixel thingy. I just watched the whole movie twice (both released), on my OLED TV 55" (2,2m from the tv) and I could not spot the difference!
